CLIENT NEEDS

Separate from an interior remodeling project, these Aptos homeowners had an existing deck that was deteriorating and unsafe, prompting the client to seek a complete transformation. Their vision was to create a multifunctional outdoor space perfect for cooking, dining, and socializing, all while enjoying the stunning views of Monterey Bay. They wanted the outdoor kitchen to be a central feature, enhancing both everyday living and entertainment, making the deck a versatile and inviting space for family and guests alike.

TALMADGE SOLUTION

To enhance the deck’s functionality and capitalize on the breathtaking views, large double bi-parting doors were installed, seamlessly connecting the indoors to the newly expanded deck, which more than doubled in size. Given the sloping site, a robust steel moment frame was designed to provide essential support. The outdoor kitchen was extended to include a BBQ, side burner, copper sink, refrigerator, and pizza oven, making it a true hub for both cooking and entertaining. The deck also features a spacious dining area and a cozy spot by a linear gas fireplace. A clear glass railing was installed to preserve the panoramic views of Monterey Bay, with the railing height elevated at the corners to serve as an effective windbreak for added comfort.

The deck’s design combines both aesthetics and functionality, featuring Ipe wood for its natural beauty, durability, and fire resistance. A transparent glass railing was chosen to preserve the stunning views, while a taller redwood railing and trellis were thoughtfully positioned to provide privacy from neighboring properties. The countertops, made from Ijen Blue quartzite, offer a striking visual appeal paired with exceptional durability, seamlessly blending elegance with long-lasting performance.

CHALLENGE

Transporting the equipment down the steep hill to drill and pour concrete for the large steel moment frame posed a significant challenge. The difficult terrain required careful planning and execution. Adding to the complexity, months of rain caused delays, as we had to wait for the ground to dry out before resuming construction.

RESULT

This outdoor kitchen blends sleek, modern design with coastal living. Featuring a leathered quartzite countertop, it includes a gas grill with a rotisserie and a wood-fired pizza oven, perfect for hosting large gatherings. The countertop offers plenty of workspace, ideal for preparing meals or displaying fresh herbs, while a wooden privacy screen adds structure without blocking the ocean view. Glass railings keep the deck safe while maintaining the panoramic seaside vista, making this space ideal for both cooking and relaxing.
