Coastal White Kitchen Remodel in Capitola, CA

CLIENT NEEDS

This small beach house was in walking distance from to Capitola Village and the ocean. Although the location was perfect, the kitchen was outdated and poorly laid out. The homeowner wanted to open up the kitchen and living room, update the kitchen appliances, and improve the overall room flow to maximize her living space.

TALMADGE SOLUTION

By removing the wall between the living room and the kitchen, our architect created a new, open floor plan. A kitchen peninsula helped achieve the same function as an island in a smaller space. Also a useful substitute to a table, the peninsula was designed to seat 3-4 people at the counter.

The white custom shaker-style cabinets were paired with IceStone recycled glass countertops and complemented with a white ceramic tile backsplash in a shell pattern. The client chose GE Café appliances in a matte white finish and the hardwood flooring was thoughtfully designed into the kitchen and living room areas to seamlessly blend the rooms together.

Challenge

When creatively designing the kitchen, it was important to the homeowner that the door in the kitchen that accessed the driveway remain in its location. To accomplish the open floor plan that the homeowner wanted, we removed a load-bearing wall, replacing it with a support beam. This beam was hidden in the ceiling so the ceiling could run continuously between the kitchen and living room.

RESULT

This Capitola homeowner was pleased with the kitchen and living room updates to her beach house that not only maximized the usable space in a small home, but also felt authentic to her design style and the home’s architecture.
