For countertops, Quartz is a popular and recommended option, especially for coastal homes, due to its non-porous nature and resistance to staining from salt and citrus. It offers consistency, durability, and low maintenance. Natural stone can work well too and is very pleasing on the eye, but it does require regular sealing to prevent salt air from penetrating its pores.
The flooring you choose will depend on how much traffic your kitchen will need to support and your family’s lifestyle. Lots of sandy feet? Porcelain tile is water-resistant and easy to clean, while providing a cooling effect in the hotter parts of the year. If you prefer a timber feel, engineered wood with its layered construction provides great protection against fluctuating coastal humidity.
Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) is another option, which is entirely waterproof and comes in designs that mimic coastal features, such as the grain of driftwood. Polished concrete is yet another possibility. It’s incredibly strong and durable, is impervious to sand scratches, and is naturally cool underfoot when things get hot.
“In coastal kitchens, material selection is critical. We guide clients toward finishes that feel light and beachy but won’t deteriorate from humidity or heavy use over time,” says Danielle.
Material selection was an important consideration during an ADU rebuild we worked on in Santa Cruz. Different materials were chosen for the interior and exterior to withstand the coastal climate, thereby remaining functional and maintaining the stylish look for as long as possible.
