Garage Transformation in Aptos, CA:
From Cluttered Catch-All to Functional Workspace

CLIENT NEEDS

The existing garage had become a high-traffic catch-all space that no longer supported the homeowner’s day-to-day needs. As the owner of an organizational business, they needed a clean, well-lit environment that could function as both a staging area and an efficient workspace, while still providing practical storage.

The layout created several challenges. Tight clearance between the parked vehicle and laundry area made everyday tasks like loading and unloading difficult. Open shelving and exposed utilities contributed to a cluttered, unfinished feel, and there was no dedicated surface for folding laundry or organizing materials.

The goal was to transform the garage into a more functional, streamlined space, one that supports workflow, improves safety and access, and reflects the level of organization the homeowner values in both their business and home.

DISCOVERY & DESIGN STRATEGY

During the planning phase, we carefully addressed the tight spatial constraints. By measuring the vehicle’s footprint alongside the existing laundry units, we ensured the new cabinetry would not interfere with parking or access, avoiding a space that looks beautiful but doesn’t function when the car is in place.

TALMADGE SOLUTION

The solution focused on maximizing vertical space and creating a clean, enclosed, and highly functional environment. We replaced the mix of wire and wood shelving with a cohesive, built-in cabinetry system using durable composite materials designed specifically for garage applications.

The design includes a dedicated laundry station with a continuous countertop spanning the washer and dryer, creating a practical surface for folding and staging. Full-height cabinetry discreetly encloses the water heater while maintaining necessary access and ventilation, and integrated storage eliminates the need for standalone pieces, streamlining the overall workflow.

A thoughtful material and color palette reinforces the transformation. Cabinetry is paired with Benjamin Moore “Decorator’s White” (OC-149), a soft white that adds subtle depth against the walls, while a complementary blue door introduces a fresh accent and a nod to the home’s coastal setting. Light grey quartz countertops complete the space, keeping the work surface bright, durable, and easy to maintain.

Challenge

One of the primary challenges was the exposed water heater and vent piping. Through the design phase, we developed a custom integrated cabinetry solution that conceals these mechanical elements while maintaining proper access and code-compliant ventilation. Detailed 3D elevations allowed the client to clearly visualize the transformation, from an exposed utility area to a clean, cohesive, and finished space.

RESULT

The transformation turns a once cluttered, underutilized garage into a clean, intentional space that supports both everyday living and the homeowner’s professional workflow. By introducing full-height cabinetry, integrated storage, and a dedicated laundry station, the layout now functions with clarity and purpose, improving access, safety, and efficiency throughout.

Concealed mechanicals and a cohesive material palette bring a sense of order and refinement, while durable, garage-appropriate finishes ensure the space performs just as well as it looks. What was once a catch-all area is now a streamlined, well-lit environment designed for organization, productivity, and long-term use.
