CLIENT NEEDS

This mid-century modern home had been thoughtfully updated over the years, but the fireplace remained a relic of the past. The gas-burning unit was surrounded by heavy, rough stone cladding that dominated the living room and weighed down the space. The homeowners wanted a modern, refined design that felt in harmony with the home’s architecture and interior.

TALMADGE SOLUTION

The modern design focused on simplifying and brightening the fireplace while creating a striking focal point. The old stone cladding was removed and replaced with large-format tile panels that mimic smooth plaster slabs. Subtle grooves between the panels break up the surface, adding rhythm and texture without overwhelming the clean lines.

At the base, a new hearth was framed and finished in black granite, creating a bold, sculptural foundation. It doubles as a functional surface for seating or display, while grounding the vertical fireplace design.

To preserve the home’s architectural character, the new cladding was intentionally stopped short of the ceiling. This choice keeps the exposed roof beams visually distinct and highlights the home’s mid-century charm.

CHALLENGE

One of the biggest challenges was that removing the original stone revealed wood framing and roof beams that had been hidden for decades. These needed careful restaining to match the surrounding ceiling. Some uneven framing also required creative detailing to achieve the precise, modern finish envisioned for the project.

RESULT

The remodeled fireplace now enhances the home instead of overwhelming it. Layered textures of stone-look tile and polished black granite strike a sophisticated balance between warmth and modernity. By separating the fireplace from the ceiling, the design highlights the natural wood structure above while allowing the fireplace to stand proudly as its own architectural feature.

The result is a modern, welcoming focal point that elevates the living room and finally complements the beauty of the rest of the home.
