Bathroom Remodels
Santa Cruz Westlake Primary Bathroom Remodel
CLIENT NEEDS
The owners of this Westside Santa Cruz home inherited it from the husband’s parents. He spent his childhood in this 1955 era home. It was a rental for many years for UCSC students and suffered its fair share of abuse. A whole house remodel was needed to turn it around. The primary bathroom presented many challenges to our architect. The only entrance to the bedroom was either through an awkward vestibule off the entry hall through the closet or through the bathroom itself. A reconfiguration of the entire space needed to be thought out.
TALMADGE SOLUTION
The clients were attracted to Japandi style – a fusion of Japanese and Scandinavian design with minimalistic features that are aesthetically pleasing yet highly functional. With natural materials, muted colors, clean lines, and minimal, yet well-curated, furnishings. Japandi design isn’t sparse—it’s intentional.
There was a small “office” to the back of the bedroom which was turned into a spacious primary closet and room for a well appointed primary bath was gained. A powder room off the hall was tucked into the small amount of space next to the new bathroom for guests.
The muted tones and natural materials reflect the Japandi theme for the entire home. This bathroom has rift sawn white oak cabinetry with brushed satin nickel finger pulls, topped with Neolith- Calacatta Gold solid surface counter and backsplash. The shower is lined to the ceiling with Florida Tile “Cream” 24×12 pieces and the floor Florida Tile Span “Cream” basketweave mosaic. Chrome fixtures by Waterworks were used with the Lacava trough sink and in the shower, which features a lighted shower niche. A wall mounted Toto toilet floats above the 24×24 “Cream” floor tiles.
RESULT
A spacious sanctuary, a well organized primary bedroom suite, and a bonus powder room.
