CLIENT NEEDS
Perched on a hillside in Aptos, this primary bathroom remodel reimagines a space that once felt dated and inefficient. The existing layout was dominated by an oversized spa tub, limited storage, and a mix of finishes that made the room feel heavy and disconnected. The goal was to create a more refined, functional space that better supported daily routines while reflecting a more cohesive design vision.
DISCOVERY & DESIGN STRATEGY
Working within the existing footprint, the design focused on simplifying the layout and improving usability. Replacing the large spa tub with a more practical tub-shower combination immediately opened up the space, creating a lighter, more balanced feel. This change also made room for a custom built-in linen cabinet, adding much-needed storage and enhancing day-to-day functionality.
TALMADGE SOLUTION
The material palette introduces a confident, modern aesthetic while maintaining warmth and texture. Deep green zellige tile wraps the shower, adding depth and subtle variation, while dark hexagonal floor tile grounds the space. Natural wood-grain cabinetry softens the overall composition, paired with a clean quartz countertop and understated lighting.
Brushed nickel plumbing fixtures were selected for durability in the area’s hard water conditions, while powder-coated black hardware provides contrast and a refined edge.
CONSTRUCTION CHALLENGE
Precise coordination was key, particularly in integrating pocket doors and custom cabinetry within the existing structure. The removal of the oversized spa tub presented the primary challenge, but ultimately allowed the layout to function more efficiently and cohesively.
RESULT
The finished space is calm, cohesive, and thoughtfully detailed. What was once a fragmented bathroom now supports daily routines with ease while introducing a more elevated, design-forward character. The homeowners are thrilled with both the transformation and the improved functionality of their home.
