Aging in Place Design:
Primary Bathroom Remodel in Aptos, CA
These Aptos homeowners were ready to remodel their primary bathroom. They wanted an updated look with features that would enable them to successfully age in place.
Ready for a fresh, new look to their primary bathroom, these homeowners worked closely with the Talmadge Construction design team to determine a new layout along with updated features and finishes. In choosing selections, it was important to our client that we use durable materials. As a solution, both form and function were achieved in the selection of quartz countertops and low-maintenance porcelain tile on the floor and walls that had the look of a stone surface.
The old tub and sliding glass shower doors were removed and replaced with a low-threshold walk-in shower and large patterned-glass sliding doors, along with large wall and flooring tiles throughout the bathroom.
To address our clients’ aging-in-place needs, the Talmadge team installed vertical and horizontal grab bars and a large shower niche to hold bathing supplies, along with a grab bar near the toilet.
The existing vanity was transformed by replacing dark cabinets with light ones, which were topped with quartz countertops and a solid slab quartz backsplash above the sink. The medicine cabinet and lighting were replaced with an oversized mirrored cabinet that was flanked with beautiful modern sconces. For functionality, dual towel racks were added on either side of the sink.
The original handle designed on the medicine cabinet opened from the bottom, which created a design problem with the new backsplash around the primary bathroom sink. Talmadge solved this challenge by crafting a custom-made handle on the bottom right of the mirrored door instead.
These Aptos homeowners were extremely happy with the updated look, new color scheme, and improved functionality of their primary bathroom remodel. It not only helped to update the entire house, but they were glad to have a bathroom that is now safe and easy to use, particularly in anticipation of their future needs.
“We just love the change. Working with the designer was such an easy experience. The designer really listened to what we wanted, then sourced the materials for us, and that was that. The construction is excellent and the whole experience was as easy as construction can be.”
