Aging in Place Bathroom Remodel in Capitola, CA

CLIENT NEEDS

The homeowners of this charming beach cottage in Capitola, CA were looking to create a more accessible, “aging in place” bathroom on the first floor, complete with a curbless shower. The current bathroom, which was original to the home, was outdated and no longer met their needs for functionality and safety.

TALMADGE SOLUTION

Before moving forward with the design, we collaborated with our plumber and project manager to ensure that a curbless shower could be installed in the location of the existing tub. A proper curbless shower requires sufficient space for the waste pipe, and fortunately, this home had the necessary room to proceed. While the vanity and toilet remained in their original locations, we relocated the bathroom door to a more functional spot on the wall. The old door was narrow, so we upgraded to a wider one to improve accessibility and enhance the overall flow of the space.

The design for this bathroom remodel started with the modern and sleek Rift White Oak floating vanity, topped with a white quartz countertop. Chrome fixtures were used throughout the space, adding a contemporary touch, while multiple grab bars were strategically placed in the shower and next to the toilet for enhanced safety. We also installed additional “blocking” behind the walls for future bath accessories—a decision that came in handy when the client later requested an additional grab bar after the project was completed.

The shower tile features a stunning 3D texture resembling ocean waves, a fitting nod to the home’s beachside location. Lastly, the LED mirror above the vanity adds a touch of luxury, giving the bathroom a resort-like ambiance, making you feel like you’re relaxing in Hawaii.

RESULT

The finished bathroom exudes a modern, elegant design with unmistakable California beach vibes. Despite its compact size, the space feels open, airy, and bright. Nestled in Capitola’s “Jewel Box” neighborhood, this bathroom sparkles with subtle yet stylish touches, bringing a little extra “wow” factor to the home. Additionally, it meets the homeowners’ aging-in-place requirements, with thoughtful features like a curbless shower, grab bars, and wider doorways for enhanced safety and accessibility.
