The Challenge

The existing bathroom presented several challenges, including a sunken tub that created safety concerns, along with an outdated design defined by dark finishes, bold color contrasts, and glass block elements.

The Design Approach

The design approach began with a careful evaluation of the space, balancing the homeowners’ goals with the realities of the home. Each decision was guided by the client’s needs, the opportunities and constraints of the existing layout, budget considerations, and permitting requirements.

Designer Perspective

Danielle Grenier

“This very dated bathroom presented a fun challenge. Initially, the client considered removing the entire space. Ultimately, we needed to retain the rounded wall, which became a key design element to work around.” — Danielle Grenier

Key Design Decisions

Opening vs. Defining the Space

Rather than removing everything and starting from scratch, the design worked within the existing structure, carefully balancing openness with defined areas to improve flow and function.

Function vs. Aesthetic

Each design decision was evaluated for both daily performance and visual impact, ensuring the space functions as well as it looks.

Project Insight

It was fortunate this project was completed when it was. As is common in older homes, especially in coastal communities, underlying issues were uncovered during construction. In this case, a leak was identified and addressed early, helping prevent more significant damage to the home.
